Unregistered Vehicle inspections (Blue Slip)

An Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection Scheme (AUVIS) inspection (previously known as a blue slip) ensures vehicles meet safety requirements and design and identity standards.
At Roselands Automotive we are vehicle examiners who are accredited by Transport for NSW under the Authorised Inspection Scheme to inspect your vehicle for a blue slip.

You must get an AUVIS inspection if your vehicle:

  • registration has been expired for more than 3 months
  • has been brought into NSW from another Australian State or Territory or another country
  • has no number plate
  • is a write-off approved for re-registration (see written-off vehicles).

An AUVIS inspection may also be required for:

  • changes to vehicle registration records due to significant changes like a new engine installation
  • clearing some defect notices.

AUVIS inspection reports are valid for 42 days from the date of inspection.

If the vehicle is imported, you need to provide the authorised examiner with a Vehicle Import Approval issued for the vehicle by the Australian Government’s Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications.

All authorised inspection stations display ‘AIS’ signs listing what safety checks they can perform. These signs must be displayed at the front of the premises.
Each and every vehicle driven on the roads in Australia need to be registered. In order to be able to register your vehicle, you need to have it check to make sure that it is safe to drive and is roadworthy. These stipulations are put in place by the Roads and Traffic Authority or the RTA. This type of vehicle check is what is known as a E-Safety Inspection or as also known as a Pink Slip.

If your vehicle passes the inspection and is safe and roadworthy then you will receive a ‘pink slip’ from the mechanic. Each of these inspections can take anywhere from 30-45 minutes to complete, and the results are valid for up to 42 days.

What is the difference between a Pink Slip and a Blue Slip?

A Pink Slip is a safety inspection report issued by an authorised inspection station (e.g. garage) to prove that a vehicle has passed the required roadworthy standards for registration. Vehicles more than five (5) years old require a safety inspection as a condition of registration renewal.

A Blue Slip is a safety inspection report issued by Service NSW to prove that a vehicle has passed the required roadworthy, design and identity standards for registration. You will need a Blue Slip in the following circumstances:

  • Interstate transfers,
  • Vehicles that have run out of registration,
  • And vehicles that have been imported.
